about

The protests after the death of George Floyd started me down the road of this composition. I thought it was going to be a vocal tune. But the music had other ideas, and I went with it. Two deeply gifted colleagues of mine - Gene Elders (from George Straits' band) and Mitch Watkins (from Leonard Cohen, Lyle Lovett) - lent their beautiful voices to this sound poem of grief and hope. I call it Holy Ground because I think a turning point IS holy ground. Whether it stays holy depends on what we do with the opportunity.
